This pattern is perfect for making a quick festive coaster as a last minute gift, or making a full set of coasters and placemats for your Christmas lunch!
The Christmas Tree Coaster and Placemat are worked in the round and created using double crochet (UK terms) and slip stitch.
A set of two coasters and placemat use up small amounts of yarn, making it a great stash buster.

Multiple stitches worked in one stitch.
I’ve used stranded colourwork (fair isle) technique for most of this design. For the Christmas Tree trunks, I’ve used the intarsia technique.
Stranded colourwork is when you carry the inactive colour behind the active colour. The inactive colour floats behind the active colour. Every four or five stitches, crochet over the inactive colour, this carries the inactive colour along behind the active colour and prevents puckering.
Intarsia colourwork is when you cut a length of yarn for the small area that you will be crocheting. Instead of carrying the unused colour behind the active colour, you leave it where it was last used. Then when you come back to the point where you need to use that colour again, you pick it up from where it’s hanging and crochet with it as normal.
The Intarsia technique works best when you’re crocheting in rows, but it does work well for the tree trunks in this design, because the trunks are only two stitches wide, and it’s easy to pick up the brown again from where it was left off without any puckering.
When changing colour, join the new yarn on the last yarn over of the previous stitch, unless otherwise stated.
Work in a continuous spiral without slip stitching into the first st in the round.
Always sew in the ends on the wrong sides of your work.

Then use your new placemat and coasters! Happy Christmas!
For Valentine’s day 2021, I made a Heart Coaster. This coaster is worked in the round too. When I was considering designing a new Christmas pattern for 2021, I wanted it to be a practical item and also use up small bits of green yarn that I had. So I thought of my Heart Coaster and then I thought, I could make a tree version!
