Fossil and Sand Cowl ⋆ Free Crochet Pattern
The Cowl is lightweight and perfect for warming spring days. This is a very simple cowl that uses less than two balls and can be quickly crocheted up for a gift.
There are two versions of the cowl. Version 1 of the Cowl goes around the neck once. Version 2 is double the width of version 1 and can be wrapped around the neck twice.
The first image of me wearing an orange jacket is version 1 and the image of me in a pink top is me wearing version 2.
My Fossil and Sand Cowl was inspired by a trip to Lyme Regis in the South of England one spring day. We went fossil hunting along the beach and it was a cool day with a bit of warmth, making me want a spring cowl.
The simple pattern in the cowl makes me think of fossils in sand.

Essential Information
To make a multi-coloured scarf change colour every round. Change to the new colour at the start of the round after you have slipped stitches into the top of the sts up to the first 2 chain space. (See start of round 2 for either version).

- 3 mm (US C/2 or D/3)
I recommend Addi Swing, as it’s an ergonomic hook and it suits my style of crocheting – which is like holding a knife or buy a standard crochet hook.

19 sts x 8 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in) in pattern below for gauge using 3 mm (US C/2 or D/3) hook or size needed to obtain stated gauge
Pattern for gauge (US terms)
With White, ch 22
Row 1: (2 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc) into fourth ch from hook, *4 ch, skip 8 ch, (3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc) in next ch**, rep from * to ** once more. (19 sts)
Row 2: Turn, ss into all sts up to first ch 2 sp, 3 ch (2 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc) into ch 2 sp, *4 ch, (3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc) in next ch**, rep from * to ** once more. (19 sts)
Repeat row 2, six more times.
Pattern for gauge (UK terms)
With White, ch 22

Multiple Stitch Types Worked in One Stitch
When multiple stitch types are worked into one stitch, the instructions that must be worked in the next st will be put in brackets. For example: (3 dtr, 3 ch, 3 dtr) in next st.
