This Sparking Icicles Bunting free crochet pattern is made up of lots of little crocheted icicles that are joined together to form a strip of icicles. The icicles are worked in the round and make a fun decoration for your home at Christmas time.

70g / m / 230 yards in White.
I recommend Addi Swing, as it’s an ergonomic hook and it suits my style of crocheting – which is like holding a knife or buy a standard crochet hook.
11 dc x 11 rows = 5 x 5 cm (2 x 2 in) using 3 mm (US C/2 or D/3) hook or size needed to obtain stated gauge

Icicle 1: 7 cm x 2.5 cm (2.75 in x 1 in)

Always sew in the ends on the wrong sides of your work.
If using alternative yarn, for example 10 Ply, you will need to use a smaller hook than advised for that yarn. For example, if the yarn band recommends 5 mm for a 10 Ply, use a 4.5 mm or 4 mm, this is so that the crochet is firm and will not allow any fibrefill stuffing to come through.

Rnd 1: With White and working into a magic ring, 1 ch, 4 dc into the ring. Pull the short thread to close the magic ring. (4 sts)
Continue working in a continuous spiral without slip stitching into the first stitch.
Rnd 2: [2 dc into next st] four times. (8 sts)
Sew in the end from the magic ring.
Rnd 3: 8 dc.

Line up all icicles in a random order, mixing up all four types of icicles.
Before attaching the icicles to the bunting they will look like small cones. When you join them together to the bunting line you will be holding the icicles flat and crocheting the top of them together so that they are no longer an open cone.
With White, chain 6.
Ss into the 6th ch from the hook (the very first chain created) to create a loop for hanging up the icicle bunting.
Then, 20 ch, hold the first icicle flat and dc into the top of the final rnd (crocheting both sides together), then 1 ch and join the next icicle in the same way.
Join all the icicles with a single ch gap between each icicle until all icicles are joined.
At the end of the bunting, 26 ch, then ss into the 6th ch from the hook.
Cut the yarn, fasten off and sew in all ends.
Then hang up your bunting!

I designed the Sparkling Icicles Bunting when I lived in Australia. I missed the cold weather from the UK and I knew that I wouldn’t be seeing ice for a long time! I wanted to make a unique decoration and decided to make icicles to hang in my home. These icicles also look similar to pieces of coral that I saw on the Great Barrier Reef! So they double up as coral bunting!
